About the Artist

Wang Yu'An, a member of China National Art Association (accepted in 1989 when he was 34) and the dean of Painting & Calligraphy Institute under China Federation of Literary and Art Circles

Born in 1958, Hebei province, China, Wang's practiced visual art for over 50 years and is highly acclaimed for both his oil paintings and ink paintings. From 1984 till now, he's won a number of gold awards at national exhibitions for a wide range of art forms including ink painting, oil painting, comic and illustration. In 2003, his work won "Best Creative Award" during "The First Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition" in Paris, France. And in 2008, his work was auctioned for 7 figures (RMB) through Poly Auction (Peking). In the past 10 years, his "Tang Dynasty Redefined" series (oil version and ink painting version) are widely reported by professional media, and auctioned for 6-7 figures on average both online and off line, for example, in 2007, his work was auctioned for USD32032.61 at Poly online auction; in 2008, his work was auctioned for USD15492.14 at Poly online auction, just to list a few

Wang Yu'An's ink paintings have shown a strong personal mark. This is particularly seen in his "Tang Dynasty Redefined" series: the paintings investigate the lives of young upper-class women, represented through their leisure activities in the gardens. However, unlike the works of similar themes in the past, Wang's paintings have a strong appeal of modern aesthetics, a sense of romance, innocency nostalgia and sentiment, which are achieved by investigating the relationships among settings, objects and female body postures as well as the blend of colors, shadows and lights - all through very concise brushworks yet not typically seen in traditional Chinese ink works which is more often than not "two dimensional".
