About the Artist

Sun Peizeng, born in 1963 in Shandong province, Zeng studied at Central Academy of Fine Arts, China Academy of Art, and Beijing Phoenix Ridge Academy. He is a member of the China National Artists Association, council of the Chinese Painting Society, council of the Chinese Painting Society (USA), member of the Chinese Fine Brushwork Painting Society, director of the Central State Organ Artists Association, professor of the Institute of Oriental Culture and council of the National Academy of Ethnic Painting. In 2011 and 2012, he was nominated as the Most Collectable Contemporary Artist of the Year by China Collector Association in 2 years in a row. His works are published in various professional magazines and newspapers, and he’s published 8 painting collections.

Sun's ink painting demonstrates highly skilled traditional brushworks, with which, the lines and curves are drawn with fine calligraphy techniques from different historical periods. Meanwhile, the works also show a clear modern twist, especially by paying attention to concise forms. In addition, as a contemporary artist, Sun often chose themes connected to modern life and society, such as the lives of minorities, etc.

In 2017, his work <the Riped Tomatoes> was sold for USD 11715, <Cattle Feed Under the Shade of Pine Trees> was sold for USD 13221, <New Blossoms On the Old Trees> was sold for USD 13723, just to list a few.

In this particular painting, Sun used a particular ink painting technique called “dry brush“ which is dated back to over 5000 years ago and became highly popular in Sui & Tang Dynasty. Dry Brush, as seen in the naming, is to use thick ink without mixing with water, to paint with calligraphy lines and dots, to create the “dry, thick and rich“ sensations. It’s considered having high academic value for its high level of difficulty and powerful expressive force.
